A lookout’s job starts very early everyday. Their job is to look out for any interesting sightings for the day.
It is thanks to them that the whale and dolphin watching industry is successful in the Azores.
On land, the lookouts use binoculars and when they spot whales or dolphins, they communicate with us via VHF radio’s and mobile phone, indicating the animals’ position, heading and the weather conditions. The ocean is immense, without them, it would be like looking for a “needle in a haystack.”
